Roy Follows was 16 when he left school and joined the armed forces. As a child in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, England, he’d seen the Foreign Legion sporting their badges from around the world, inspiring him to travel. By the age of 19, he’d travelled around the world three times – long before the days of long haul flights and vaccinations against tropical diseases.
At 22, his thirst for adventure not satisfied, he signed up for the Malay Police to join the fight against a band of ruthless communists hidden away deep within the Malayan jungle. Within a year he had become the youngest ever commander of a jungle fort and platoon operation deep within enemy controlled territory.
