Roy Follows was 16 when he left school and joined the armed forces. As a child in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, England, he’d seen the Foreign Legion sporting their badges from around the world, inspiring him to travel. By the age of 19, he’d travelled around the world three times – long before the days of long haul flights and vaccinations against tropical diseases.

Within a year he had become the youngest ever commander of a jungle fort and platoon operation deep within enemy controlled territory.
